Plane Travelers & Rite Stories
So we can start tracking these weirdos
by Salme · Jun 19, 2026 · view history →
This is, at the very least, for my own edification and hopefully for the edification of others. The story told through various Rite-tones gives us significant information about several individuals who traveled the planes before us.
Having made contact with Tasna, Duškomira, and Xilai, we now have considerably more information about these tones and this process. See also this linkpearl post: Verification Concerning Rite-tone Resonances, though I’ve done my best to keep this folio updated with the current information there.
Khejvard, Beastforged Scavenger of the Beast
Many of the Fang-aspected Rite-tones seem to invoke Khejvard. Probably human, likely deceased.
Khejvard’s Rite-tones
Graces of the Fang
- [Warmonger]: There were those who simply believed war was a certainty. Khejvard knew it, in his very flesh.
- [Will to Fight - Fang]: “Sometimes, the only real trick is… you gotta be bigger and badder than the other guy.” – Khejvard, Beastforged scavenger
- [That’s When I Carried You]: “Khejvard found something interesting today scavenging. Someone, apparently. Calls themself Xilai.”
- [Gut Feeling]: “You gotta be ready! You gotta rush in! If you don’t strike first, the fiends will!”
Rites of the Fang
- [Crush]: “I dunno what the hells the Beast burped up, and I don’t want it to live long ‘nough to find out.”
- [Entrench]: “I’ll never understand how ya kept yourself alive before I got here.”
- [Death Parade]: “You just gotta trust that the fiends’ll run out eventually.”
Sidereal Rites
- [Everyone Dies Someday]: “Set your heart right every day. Fight like you’re already dead and have nothin’ to fear. That’s freedom.”
- [Rage]: “Sometimes, all I can think about is how good it feels t’ sink my hammer into a fiend. Dunno what that means.”
- [Beatdown]: “Make ‘em choose between takin’ the hit and fightin’ back, and you’ve already got ‘em beat.”
Duškomira, Night-Blessed, of Valaïs
Many of the Claw-aspected Rite-tones seem to invoke Duškomira. Duškomira has died once, and then lived again—this seems to be the “undead” referenced in the “Traveler’s Guide,” which Duškomira has noted has a definite bias. Duškomira noted that she can control every aspect of her appearance.
- I met Duškomira by walking into a shop hidden in a mirror in the Queenstown Bazaar. I’ll accession the memory later. I did not know it was her at the time.
Duškomira’s Rite-tones
Graces of the Claw
- [Combat Instinct]: “You are of the darkness now, Duškomir. You must learn to walk alongside it”.
- [The Will to Fight - Claw]: “I’ll tell you a secret. The secret is- Death is on your side, not his.” —Duškomira, Night-Blessed
- [Honed Combat Instinct]: “The night belonged to Duškomira, and she to it.”
- [Combat Reflexes]: “My loyalties lie elsewhere now. I will not harm you if you do not harm me. I have a home to which I must return safely.” —Duškomira, Night-Blessed
- [Pragmatism]: She had been no stranger to death while she was alive. Now, she danced with it, joy in her heart.
- [Momentum]: There was no shortage of those who would quiet her song; there was no shortage of knives in the night.
Rites of the Claw
Many of these are unattributed. I’m guessing somewhat from tone, though some of these might also be Tasna? Some of the others sound very much like Khejvard. Only Instructive insomuch as it might reveal character.
- [Shifting Strike]: “Sometimes, things just aren’t the way you thought they were.”
- [Feint]: “Make them defend against what isn’t there, and they won’t ever notice what is.”
- [Backstab]: “Not a drop of honor to be found here. Just the Song, and each other.”
Sidereal Rites
- [Strangling Darkness]: “Sometimes, you can just stand back and let the Night do all the hard work for you.”
- [Sorrowful Memory]: “Sometimes if I’m away from home too long, I hear the Pathos in my heart. Reminding me of who I used to be.”
Rohsu Xilai, Kindred Knight of Mu
Many of the Scale-aspected Rite-tones seem to invoke Xilai. Kin.
Xilai’s Rite-tones
Graces of the Scale
- [The Unwavering]: Through the harshest days, against the fiercest foes, Xilai’s faith never once faltered.
- [Will to Fight - Scale]: “It matters not where I am. I will still protect those in need of protection.” —Xilai, Kindred Knight
- [Guarded Hand]: Xilai found it easier, sometimes, to think of their armour as their true face.
- [Til the Last]: Xilai found themself in an unfamiliar place. Then, they found themself alone.
- [Grin and Bare It]: The heat here hit different. The fiends here were strange…
The combination of the text found on Khejvard’s [That’s When I Carried You] + [Til the Last] and [Grin and Bare It] make me suspect that, however Xilai ended up on the Beast it was neither intentional nor easy.
Rites of the Scale
- [Block]: “Yes, I know it is twice my size. No, I do not care.”
- [Wall]: “You will have to go through me!”
- [Taunt]: “You will die! You will die and the White Sun will scour your bones until you are naught but sand!”
- [Protect]: “It is what I do. It is what I have always done.”
-
[Maintenance]: “Let me take some weight off your shoulders, friend.”
- Notably, this Rite-tone shows Tasna and Khejvard as well as Xilai, I believe—though not Duškomira
- [Shed Scales]: “Khejvard! Remember what you said about the best defense?!”
Other Tellurian Rites
-
[Wild Swing]: “Make me an opening, Xilai! Let’s finish it off!”
- Unsure who the speaker is, though Khejvard would be the logical conclusion
Sidereal Rites
-
[Condemnation]: “Go ahead. Do your worst. Tasna taught me a few tricks.”
- Mentions Tasna; speaker is Xilai, confirmed by Duškomira
Tasna of Samudra
Many of the Breath-aspected Rite-tones seem to invoke Tasna. Naiad. Seems to go by “V” here on the Beast. Was the Academician of Samudra for some amount of time. Jae knows her and knows where she is.
Tasna’s Rite-tones
Graces of Breath
- [Snipe]: Aether was aether. This far away from the Academy, she’d use whatever tools she needed.
- [Will to Fight - Breath]: “Close your eyes and aim. Close your ears, and listen. Feel the aether flowing; it will tell you where you need to be.”
- [No Pressure]: Tasna led expedition after expedition into the Septentrione. She never lost a single soul to the mists.
- [Opportunity Cost]: “I don’t know where the path will lead! But if I don’t try, I’ll never learn!” —Tasna, Academician Emerita
- [Recoup]: How to get one’s bearings, when the aether is suddenly so very different from all you’ve ever known?
Rites of Breath
- [Rearguard]: The skills that served her well at home still served her every bit as well, here.
- [Command]: After all, she did run the entire Academy, once.
Sidereal Rites
- [Big Damn Hero]: Nobody treated Tasna like a stranger any more, after that.
- [Reconjure]: All that has been is recalled in the stars. Tasna conducted them like an orchestra.
- [Ivory Blood]: They found Tasna’s body in the Septentrione. Frozen solid — but not like you’d expect — alabaster and gold. Perfect.
-
[Condemnation]: “Go ahead. Do your worst. Tasna taught me a few tricks.”
- Mentions Tasna; speaker is Xilai, confirmed by Duškomira
- [Elixir]: “It’s just a blockage in your flow of aether. If you think about it like that, it’s easy to fix!”
Ciet of Almachadta (?)
Caught in the door between worlds on Almachadta in an attempt to join the others. Spoken Wood.

[The Final Seal Is Broken]
- Initial text: …. . .-.. .–. .. – - .-. .- .–. .–. . -.. .. -. …. . .-. . (HELP I’M TRAPPED IN HERE)
- Glorious text: - …. . — - …. . .-. … .- .-. . .– .- .. - .. -. –. ..-. — .-. – . (THE OTHERS ARE WAITING FOR ME)
Duškomira notes that this tone changed when they changed many of the other tones, but not through their intent.
Tones That Resisted Change
Duškomira confirmed that certain tones resisted change rather aggressively when they wrote their story into the Rite. These tones are:
-
Fiend-tones:
- [Invoke: Papyrus]: “Fold the paper just like I showed you. Fold it until it’s perfect. Then, crumple it up and burn it!”
- [Invoke: Lithos]: “Break a stone - slate works best, obviously - onto which you’ve written a fact only you know.”
- [Invoke: Lutum]: “You start with a handful of mud thrown onto the ground. Then, a seed from a plant you either love, or hate.”
- [Invoke: Orichalca]: “For this one, you can use anything at all — as long as it has value to someone.”
- [Invoke: Vitriol]: “All you need is something that was once part of a fiend, but… you do need to have been the one who killed it.”
-
Tones that belong to the Scorpion Queen (Jae more-or-less helpfully pointed them out in
This Linkpearl post).- [I Am The Odds]: “Don’t tell me you lost hope. You never had it in the first place.” – the Scorpion Queen
- [Wind Up]: “The scorpion tells you when it’s going to strike, if you’re willing to listen.”
- [Neutrality Ender]: “Either we pick a side, or the sides pick us.”
- [Break]: “Every fiend’s got a weak spot.”
- [Heavy Strikes]: “If I’m not strong enough… I’ll just keep getting stronger ‘till I can beat ALL the fiends!”
- [Massive Pyre]: “Yes, right here, right now, in the middle of all of this. Let’s dance.”
- [Real Ultimate Power]: “You don’t understand. I’M the hero in this story!”
-
Other resistant Rite-tones:
-
Tellurian tones:
- [Eating Victory]: The rules were simple: either eat, or be eaten.
- [Bash]: There’s always a bigger stick. (with its glorious version reading “Congratulations! You found it!”
- [Swipe]: Quick. Simple. Easy. (with its glorious version reading “Quick. Simple. Easy. And then you do it again.”)
- [Quick Hit]: They’ll never see you coming.
- [Adrenaline Surge]: “Fuck!” — many people, across myriad planes
- [Reassessment]: In the aftermath of battle, are fellow scavengers friends, or foes? Opportunity, or risk?
-
Burning Sidereal Tones
- [Wild and Pure and Forever Free]: How our hearts sing in the chaos!
- [Inferno]: Only fire lives here now.
- [Smother]: Where there’s fire, there’s smoke.
-
Pellucid Sidereal Tones
- [Fateshunt]: “If Fate is written in the stars then let me be its Editor!”
- [Invisible Chains]: You can’t see them. But you know they’re there.
- [Mirror Image]: As above, so below. As it was, so shall it be.
- All of the Flourishing sidereal tones except [The Final Seal is Broken], as noted above
- Radiant Sidereal Tones: Only [Condemnation], [Elixir], and [Ivory Blood] were changed; the rest were as they were found
-
Tenebrous Sidereal Tones: Only [Strangling Darkness] and [Sorrowful Memory] were changed. Particularly resistant Tenebrous tones were:
- [Forbidden Pact]: “Do you believe you can escape me before I arrive? How do you expect to outrun me, when I am already here?”
- [Dark Prophecy]: “Everyone knows the world will end. The only question that really matters is, what comes next after that?”
- [Defiance]: downbelow the nightlit city someone’s selling frozen whispers trading teeth for little-deaths and deaths for pearls that weep at midnight… (Duškomira noted that this was deeply familiar to her, less so that they tried to change it)
-
Tellurian tones:
Per my conversation with Duškomira, neither she nor Xilai recall much about their previous planes. Duškomira posited it could be something taken from you upon planar traversal. I expect we’ll discuss this more in-depth in person with all of us.
hunkers down and it turns out that tree-crystal-people can grin. “Oh wow. Wow. Wow, okay, that -is- adorable. Sorry. We were answering a question.” A (brief) pause. “Names. We mostly speak to Tasna. That’s not the name she’s using where she is but that’s what she said her real name is so hopefully that’s helpful.”
: “Tasna’s alive? And you still speak to her?” She is not pacing. She is trying very hard to be patient. The Sword-Saint is patient. She’s not been a very good Sword-Saint of late.
: “Unless her parrot is really, really, -really- good, and we don’t think even she could build one that good.”
goes from slightly blushing at the adoration to awestruck in the blink of an eye. “Tasna… lives?” His brow furrows in thought. “No, that makes sense. Of course she lives. We live, why wouldn’t - wait, but that means - hold on, so -…? ?? ???” You can imagine the sounds of the gears turning in his head, unable to verbalize his thoughts as quickly as they race through his mind.
looks incredibly confused. “How…do you both…know…?”
: “Badri showed me–the Mask. Ciet was the the Sword-Saint before Badri, and he and Tsem and the King all were … sending messages, to these strangers. The only name Badri or the mask remembered was Tasna, but that was so long ago–”
: “Tasna….is Samudran, then? A friend of yours?”
: “…hang on we have to (rotate) this for a bell. The Sword-Saint knows about Tasna because we talked to Ciet about it and somehow every Sword-Saint knows what every other Sword-Saint also knew, we confirmed that hypothesis three centuries ago. The Kushtaka knows about Tasna because Kushtaka are from Tasna’s home.”
looks equally quizzical. “Tasna was from my world, Samudra, at least originally. She was a Naiad and one of the Primi of the Academy. She went out on a mission to explore a part of our world and went missing. I knew her more by name and reputation than personally, but everyone knows the story of what happened to her, or at least what little of it people care to repeat. Her disappearance rocked a lot of people pretty badly, in some cases literally.”
shuts up and LISTENS because this is DATA and they let out a little gust of interest. “…yeah, okay. That makes sense. She told us she found a door in a glacier.”
nods to the Wolf-Priest, vaguely. “Tasna said there were… ‘doors in the dark’. She couldn’t… get where she wanted to go. There were- okay. There were supposed to be five of them, she said. And… Ciet was… or THOUGHT they were, supposed to be one of them. And now there are three.” They droop, slightly. “…but now you all are in the picture, so… Light, we hope she picks up soon.”
: “What uh… What were the other names, out of curiosity?”
: “Tasna, Xilai, and Duškomira. And… Khejvard, but he’s been gone for decades.”
closes her eyes and counts some amount of numbers. She is breathing. Her breath is steady. “You said Khejvard is gone. What happened to him? Do you know?”
: “Deep in the Tangle there’s a place that’s important to the Sword-Saints. That’s… all we know.” They look apologetically at Salme, their leaves drooping slightly. “Old age, we think. Tasna… didn’t talk about it much. Some banter about how he was starting to slow down, and then… she was gone for a really long time.”
: “So, I don’t actually even know her -name-.” She laughs, mysteriously, leading Salme rather quickly through a– well. ‘Shady-looking’ isn’t precisely accurate for ANY part of the bazaar, but if it WERE to be accurate for some part of the bazaar, it would be this one. “Let me know if you see a mirror that looks– like it’s in a weird place for a mirror to be?”
ꙮ The mirror is reflecting a store that simply is not present, if you turn around and look. The other side of the square - two stalls on either side of a pleasant cobbled expanse.
: “Oh.” She looks at the mirror. “That seems. Magical.”
nods, confidently. “That’s because it is. There’s a trick to it. You’ve got to look in the mirror, and- walk backwards through the door, while you’re looking into the mirror. Hold my hand, if you want, I’ve done this plenty of times. I have no idea how she stays in business, but she pays dues on the land, so.”
laughs and takes her hand, though she confidently walks backwards. “Well I’m glad she pays her dues,” she says, right before they walk (backwards) through the door.
ꙮ Inside: It’s dark, and smells like amber incense, rich and just barely on the right side of being pleasant, rather than cloying. Red velvet curtains, light sources that are hidden behind coloured silks, so that all the light they cast is diffuse, messy - except for the display cases full of jewelry, all sorts of metals and all sorts of precious stones, under an unsparing light, that shows off every facet to the utmost. In the centre of the room, a display case full of particular pieces of jewelry, set with lodestone, with cassiterite, with calaverite and malachite, with anglesite and pyrargite, with unbreakable vials of quicksilver worked into the design.
calls out, “Hello?”
breath catches, eyes caught on the jewelry. She’s never seen anything like it. She’s not sure she’s every imagined anything like it.
calls out from behind a velvet curtain, “Oh, hello, Hero. And I see you’ve brought a guest?” Her voice is low and gravelly and drips pleasantly with sin; she steps out from behind the curtain with a long, delicate cigarette holder in her fingertips. She’s not smoking it; it’s the source of the amber incense. “Welcome, welcome.”
: “Hero?” She cuts her eyes at Saranzaya, considering.
: “She calls me that.” Almost under her breath. “I don’t know why.” Louder: “Hello, madame. Yes, I’ve brought a friend.”
: “(I can see why),” she says equally sotto voce, and then she gives a small bow.
says, “I call you that because you’re the Hero here. Your Queen is full of hot air, bless her.” She swans over to Salme, gazing down at her with a smile, reaching out, to take her hands in her own. “It’s absolutely lovely to meet you, girl. Any friend of hers is welcome in my establishment. Feel free to look around, tell me if anything particularly catches your eye.”
laughs a little at the line about Jae, and looks back to the jewelry glittering before her. “It’s all so beautiful. How would I even … pick? Or pay for it?” Zaya’s given her a lot of lucre, but this seems. Like stuff that costs a lot of lucre.
waggles her cigarette-holder, or, I suppose, more properly, her very unusual censer. “If you made it in the door, the first piece is free. Worry about that if you come back for another. Besides, I owe your friend a favor.”
shoots a glance at Saranzaya, fond and amused and admiring. “Don’t we all?”
: “That does seem to be the way of it.”
looks over the pieces. She wants. Well. Earrings, or a necklace. Gold’s her color, though the stone—she has no real opinion. She’s never seen most of these stones before. “Don’t suppose I could implore you for some advice, Zaya?”
gives Salme a long look, and then– seems to let herself space out, a little bit, and wanders, step by step, towards the display case in the centre of the room. Her eyes focus again, and– “What about this one?”
ꙮ It’s a necklace, with matching earrings that look like they were made to go along with the necklace after the fact, but they’re no less beautiful. A gold eight-pointed star, caught inside an intricate filigree rose-gold wreath. In the centre of the star is a hollow, perfectly transparent sphere banded by an iron ring, in which is trapped a mote of quicksilver, which perpetually appears to press itself against the glass outward, towards you when you look at it, perpendicular to the directions indicated by the eight-pointed star.
looks at it, and looks at it, and looks at it. “It’s beautiful,” and she is certain, yes, that this is it.
beams, and pads over to the display case, and unlocks it, and takes it out with a quiet reverence. “The Rose Gold Rose. You’ll wear it well, I think.” And then she hands it over to Salme, closes her fingers around it, pats her hand.
tilts it in her hands, looking at it thoughtfully. There is a question on her lips, and an idea formulating in her head. She is so temped to ask if she sells rings, if there’s maybe a perfect trio of matched rings waiting, somewhere, in the shop. She opens her mouth to ask, and then closes it, instead reached up to fasten the necklace around her neck.
takes a step back, looks at the necklace, glances at Salme, and she smiles with her eyes. “I think we’ll meet again, some day. Some day soon, even, perhaps. But, for the moment, it was lovely to meet you.”
bows again, this time lower. “Thank you.” She feels the weight of the necklace against the hollow of her throat. She feels like she’s been given some kind of gift that she cannot possibly understand.
: “Oh, none of that bowing.” She sounds fond. “I’m just a jewelry merchant.” She gives Salme and Zaya both a fond smile.
frowns at her tomestone again, the only way she does when she’s texting with Jorule, and doesn’t even particularly try to stop Awa from reading over her shoulder. She nods, and slides the tomestone away. “Okay. So. Does this necklace seem … hm. Can you sense anything from it?”
ꙮ Well, it doesn’t bite.
ꙮ It feels… well. It’s got a long history. Some piece of this was well-loved, and saw great travels… and then was worked into the larger piece, to see another day and another purpose.
ꙮ And that fact practically sings itself out to you– you could probably tell that with just your eyes and fingertips, and a modicum of knowledge about jewelry-work.
holds a sniffed breath, and reaches into the vibe sense of his mind, thinking- how far from the darkness has this flown? How long did it take to get here? What have you seen?
ꙮ …you can tell, at least, that it’s the iron ring around the sphere that’s old, and from afar. How far afar, you couldn’t say. And you do catch the faintest suggestion of a whiff of cinnamon.
feels almost insulted that Awa is trying to solve this with his sense of smell and instead closes his eyes and he reaches out and forms a connection with the quicksilver, and attempts to lower the distance between his understanding of it, and the jewelry pieces’ understanding of itself.
- Aurelius used their techné Reality Glitch (When a Liminal die explodes, something impossible briefly occurs—describe it.)
[An impossible connection is formed, and the name of the Gem-Seller comes to mind.]
ꙮ Indeed, it does, and then some.
: “…Duškomira? That’s. Not at all what I was expecting.”
: “I don’t know, but it wasn’t one of the plane travelers from the Rite story, yeah.”
pulls his hand back, letting the necklace slowly drop back down upon Salme. “She got the lot from a strange there, then recently was compelled to repurpose them into new pieces? Wonder that black market was still on Valais or… hm.”
