Rite of the Fang

Cast by Salme
Jun 21, 2026

The text on the Rite-tones tell a story. Fang’s is mostly about Khejvard, but at least one is Jae. I was wondering if people’d be willing to chime in and say who they think is who. Probably might also be useful for the Burning rites as well?

Jae, I know you’re reading this. You could make this real fucking easy but I’m pretty sure you’ll just sit around and preen as we try to figure out what sounds like you and what doesn’t. Still, if you’re feeling so inclined, owning your own words would be nice.

i am the odds is me btw

Jun 21, 2026

Yeah thanks Jae you fucking signed it, it’s obviously you.

Jun 21, 2026

i didnt touch that one lol

its funny as shit though

Jun 21, 2026

huh

Jun 21, 2026

It is funny as shit. One time Tsem (a sentient walking tree called a Spoken Wood) referenced [Adrenaline Surge], which was the closest I’ve ever seen a Spoken Wood get to saying fuck.

Jun 21, 2026

… That moment probably lands better if I tell it as a proper story but whatever.

Jun 21, 2026

let trees say ‘fuck’

Jun 23, 2026

If a tree says “fuck” in a forest, does it make a sound?

Jun 23, 2026

Implicitly, yes?

Jun 23, 2026

One supposes it may depend on the tree. And the forest.

Jun 23, 2026

For example, the forest could be, unknown to you, on the surface of the sun: then where is your pure intention?

Jun 23, 2026

An unusual forest, to live on the surface of the sun! Such a thing would truly teach to not make assumptions.

Jun 23, 2026

Not live for very long probably.

Jun 23, 2026

Very hardy trees, perhaps…very hardy.

↩ NotACrane #1871One supposes it may depend on the tree. And the forest.

Forests are, in my experience, very good listeners. They hear everything.

Whether they’ll tell is something else entirely. Most forests are pretty gossipy too, but some are fairly reticent.

I’m not sure whether you were trying to be instructive or inscrutable. Probably missed the point either way, but eh.

Jun 23, 2026

One is simply quite pleased with the discussion. One finds that uncertainties stimulate dialogue far more effectively than known quantities.

Jun 23, 2026

lmao, i like you

Jun 23, 2026

Well for whatever it’s worth now I’m wondering if the Loving Sun would burn a tree growing on its surface, if “loves you and would never harm you” extends that far, and if the same would apply to a Spoken Wood. Or any of us, really.

Jun 23, 2026

One may love, and yet be bound to one’s nature. How could a sun do anything but burn? And one would caution–one may wish a thing to live, yet be unable to sustain that life.

Jun 24, 2026

Well I don’t disagree, but my priors hold that anything can cause harm. Intent certainly doesn’t guard against harm. And as for the last … yes.

I met someone recently who loves things so completely and nevertheless destroys them in their love. I’m starting to suspect that’s going to be a theme.

But I’m much better at seeing the potential for harm than the potential for anything good. Anyone could probably tell you that.

Jun 24, 2026

While it is true that harm is somewhat overweighted in the scales of one’s mind–not just you, sister, but all of us–one fears that the metaphor here has gotten somewhat, ah…overwrought? Cursing trees on the surface of the sun are…well, a fascinating thought experiment. But what does it have to do with the Rite?

↩ The Wolf-Priest #1943But what does it have to do with the Rite?

We’re well into off-topic overwrought navel-gazing, and I’ve already got Jae to point out the ones that were her. The ones that were Khejvard are left to the process of elimination, though I’m going to wait to update the library folio until I can fix some of the display issues.

The purpose of this strand has been served. Let it either fall into obscurity or serve a new purpose.

↩ The Wolf-Priest #1943But what does it have to do with the _Rite_?

Thinking, talking, saying what pleases us, picking at this stray choice or another and shying from what lies within the heart - that’s the fate we’re trapped in, if we don’t risk ourselves, test ourselves, scrap and rebuild ourselves.

This thread’s fraying mess is what the rite is made to solve!

Jun 24, 2026

…well, I can’t argue with that. Carry on, carry on.
