So, some of the mana games are formatted kind of insanely, in that there were generally sliced up into chunks of a day, and then days of a week. Which didn’t matter REALISTICALLY b/c they behave like videogame characters and don’t need to eat/sleep/pace themselves before Managing HP/MP pools or whatever, always a 8 days in a week, and days are between 3 to 8 segments long depending on the campaign,

: “this is a weird detail to open with”

So there was this spell called ECLIPSE. And it had a strange gimmick, where in it would get more powerful the later into the day you cast it

and if you cast it on the day that matched its element, not only would it do normal group AoE, but you could target Literally Anyone You Know, Even If They Weren’t In Combat, From Any Distance, because sometimes peter is silly and just puts shit out there for funny fluff

Our good friend Fuepepe is playing this insanely Blue/Black Arcane Researcher. And several days into the campaign, on the day that aligns with Eclipse’s element, a Series of Events happened that somehow wound up with half the cast on the moon in persuit of some esoteric information

and right as the day is getting ready to end he turns to the people with him and goes “Sorry, but, I have to do this.”

… oh no**

And then he cast Eclipse on Everyone That’s Ever Annoyed Him Slightly Over The Entire Duration of the Campaign, including the entire ranks of at least one army, possibly two, and had enough buffs running before it did it that he just scored damage cap after damage cap after damage cap,

And the Emperor God That Rules The Land was one of those targets.

: “I have to do this.” deeply necessary.

and a couple of minutes after the Eclipse from Vladislav goes off, we see peter start going [999] [999] [999] again and are like ???? and then we realize THE EMPEROR HAS FIRED AN ECLIPSE BACK, only he targeted FUCKING EVERYONE IN THE WORLD,

and basically everyone died right before the day clicked over

except the people on the moon?

THIS COINCIDENTALLY HAPPENED TO BE ONE OF THE LAST SESSIONS THAT EVER HAPPENED FOR THE GAME since memes about table top group schedules killing games are real

(it landed on the final boss of Tales and dealt the final blow)

I know this because I was scanning Tales logs last week for reasons and Lin commented on it when it happened and name dropped aurelius lol

(fun aside hachi ran a character named aurelius in a game over a decade ago. this may or may not be relevant to sanctuary)

When teak was decided which characters to place everyone on, I was the last one. And because I had decided not to play the Weapon (who was my long standing choice) in the interest of playing a character less likely to grate on a group of new players.

and after a little back and forth we narrowed it down to either Hunter or Dreamer, and i got an Elevator Pitch for their Secrets,

start cackling and go “HEY HACHI, HACHI. IF I SAID I WANTED TO PLAY A SPECIFIC CHARACTER AND 40% OF THE MOTIVATION WAS JUST THE FUCK WITH YOU WOULD THAT BE COOL.” only not exactly like that, it was phrase a little weird, such that he responded with “ha ha what a strange question to make a person answer…” and sort of collar tugged but inevitably shrugged,

and then me and teak laughed and laughed for More Than An Hour

and ran face first into a wall with it

see Teak had told me that you laughed very much but Not that you laughed specifically to fuck with Hachi

i mean realistically it was very funny and compelling to the very specific kind of dumbass i am, and i probably would have done it regardless

and now the next time Awoken corners Aurelius and does God Knows What To Him I will know you deserve it

but i saw so many ways I could include lots of tiny little references to other things to taunt him and was like “OBOY THIS JUST UPS THE FUN FACTOR” since he didn’t mind

oh wait it was thrillseeker not daredevil but

ok so Jorule is one of my oldest characters, who’s been around since The First Mana Game

and he was a curious little guy who, in his first incarnation, was kind of like…

how do you describe a minstrel in the context of mana. Something like an animist shaman? They’d make contact with the local spirits, do jobs and favors for them in enchange for spirit coins, when they would then use to craft magical music instruments of power

So he was big focused on exploring the worlds, having a strong connection to the spiritual, and asking lots of weird questions

(I may be in and out because I am Actually Doing Work but also I am fascinated and my little noodle brain has been working overtime)

the first game didn’t last long since it was peter’s campaign

but a little while later he decided to more or less reboot the idea and i was like, well, I didn’t get to play jorule very much the first time so I’ll just reboot him too

and he got a little weirder, a little more meta in this process since he vaguely half remembered the previous version of the world in the way a handful of other NPCs did, and also class changed to be closer in fluff to something Akin But Not Exactly a Paladin Of Shade (as a final fantasy dark knight), since fue had decided he wanted to play the minstrel this time

and he got a little more into digging into the strange parts of the setting, trying to uncover the hidden truths of things, but still big on exploring. He was, at his heart, a very [Undine/Sala Shade/Wisp] character all at once, despite their almost contradictory nature (even though he THINKS of himself as undine/shade) since he was also frequently the one running the party

When the game eventually ran it course, one of the last sessions I have any solid memory of asking the Sage of Wisp what the [Point/Meaning/Reason] of the world was and they replied ‘lol there is none, do whatever the fuck you want nothing matters’ which kind of Broke Him since he’d been expecting a bigger tilde DEEP MAGIC tilde sort of answer, but really should not have been expecting one from the sage of WISP of all things

and we like to retroactively joke that this revelation ended the world, in the same that that vlad destroyed the other world

(all the Spark and White Space stuff also originated from this second instance of the campaign, which we tend to refer to as Myth, as it was actually a fairly long running campaign! the MMOB (man made of bird) who’s been mentioned on ocassion was also from here, and was the Sage of Shade)

Fast forward a bit, and peter’s running this other game I was not involved in, about, I’m not even sure, some pirates and rebels fighting against a vaguely south american flavored Empire or something…?

and on the last session I get this PM from Peter and he does,

“okay, so, I’m being a bit weird… but the Emperor God in lemonaid (that’s not actually what the campaign was called but it’s the affectionate pet name for it and i don’t remember the real one) is Actually Jorule Trying His Hand At World Craft, kind of like a Sage? And the party is about to meet him? Any key points I should reference”

and i’m like “lmao alright lemme poke my head into the session, with the knowledge I have read none of these logs and just kinda wing it, I’ll tell you more or less how to respond and you can filter it as necessary”

which was a VERY silly thing to do on any level for any reason, but none of the players noticed anything off until we mentioned it later lol

and from there he got solidified as the Really Really Intensely Shade Motherfucker who was definitely fucking around back stage in addition to on stage

he was NOT involved in Mana (the one with vlad) since I decided to play a DIFFERENT kind of undine/gnome/luna weirdo that time, but WHILE Mana was running peter decided to do a very goofy, shorter 6~8 session campaign at the same time because he had just watched the Space Dandy anime and was infatuated with it and wanted to go Full Silly mode

and in the spirit of silly me and fue decided to reuse our Myth characters and brought Jorule and Evelyn back, but IN SPAAAAAAAACE (while hachi was playing this large cyborg dude named Aurelius)

and we got a couple of increasingly random jobs from a weird lady named LT whom hachi will elaborate on later and it was, generally, just goofy fun all around.

I put him on the back burner for the next couple of games, though he got mentioned a few times on in game forums, Deep Magic Documents (someone found a list of Pure Hearts with Titles at some point), though in the last one peter attempted to run he did briefly appear in my characters prologue as a sort of shade-guardian angel kind of think and grant her the power of a pure heart to deal with Shit That Was Coming

and then a Lot Of Time Passed, and i eventually got GM Call once again and got this increasingly, incredibly stupid idea that the longer I thought about it the more I wanted to do it,

so I built this really complex roguelike system using a bunch of inspiration from a could of different videogames (slay the spire, visions of mana) and a LOT of nostalgia over the older mana games peter used to run (and which teak has ALSO run one or two of)

which accumulated in jorule Running A Campaign While Also Being The GM PC Point Of Contact, who from a small bar in the deepest reaches of space sent a small group of other meta aware characters on an Impossible Mission to break into a facility run by a group of, uh, well I skipped all D.S stuff but the overall universe of mana was Fairly Wide Reaching and there was a civilization that had, more or less, Reached Meta Enlightenment much like the scattered individual Pure Hearts did and we had several antagonistic run ins with them,

but he sent this group into one of their deep storage facilities, the “Back Burner” to steal something…. which turned out to be an Idea / Artefact (thing used to create new zone’s regions), as like, a kind of Extremely On The Nose metaphorical ‘oh hey I think i found some of my old motivation and wanna Do Stuff’ again kind of thing

(hachi was one of my players for that, too)

so he’s a silly little goober with a lot of fingers in a lot of increasingly eldritch pies

(also if one of us ever refer to The Caravan, that’s in reference to a group of Sparks that are aware of the birth and death of New Worlds [campaigns] within that universe and travels between them, since Peter had three major NPC Sparks he liked to have reroll and make difference characters in the same way we our selves did, too)

So like. Is any part of Jorule shoved into a particular character in this campaign?

(since a Spark does not necessarily need to be the same character every time, ie Theodore was probably a different aspect of the same Spark that Jorule was, which is why he could possess him when shit got Ultra Mega Weird)

They’re more like a mythological figure or folk lore hero or walking aesop fable than an active participant (Stellar Road excepted)

Tales of Lonely Tails often involve them solving problems in a very matter-of-factly way with ease and simplicity even though the tasks themselves seem impossible

if you remember the bit from last session about awoken talking about solving a kudzu problem, that’s basically an example of a lonely tails solution
