Gnosis Weaves & Material Types

At this point, per Wolf’s language, we know that the six types of gnosis can be divided into two stable triads:

  • Irrica: Flourishing + Pellucid + Burning
  • Amphilyke: Radiant + Tenebrous + Liminal
    • Amphilyke can be found in the forms of pillars in the caves of Mu. It’s a known spot; I can give directions, or any apostate can. See memories archived below.

Within each triad, each pair of gnosis forms a specific substance. It seems that the first type of gnosis in any pair is immaterial; it is the second that determines the substance. Here is the breakdown:

Irrica Triad

[flourishing/burning] + pellucid = crystal
[flourishing/pellucid] + burning = aurichalcum
[pellucid/burning] + flourishing = [unnamed; something that is both sand and stone and neither]

Any of the three resulting substances + the third gnosis = irrica

Amphilyke Triad

[radiant/(perhaps other things?)] + tenebrous = rakaznar
[tenebrous/(perhaps other things?)] + radiant = pearl
[(radiant/tenebrous/maybe something else?)] + liminal = (uncertain?)

Material Types

Aurichalcum

A rare material found principally on the Beast, mostly among Endjinn. It is gold-tinged, but has a rainbow sheen and its own internal light. Endjinn hearts consist of this substance.

  • No idea but made Aury giggle like a little girl—he thought it was a pun based of glowing ‘orichalcum’, whatever that is. A substance that has something to do with the Endjinn of the Beast.
  • also pearls on Samudra. possibly constellation light too?

Crystal

A deep, azure crystal. Possibly the same type of crystal that makes up the Lightdrinkers of Almachadta.

Irrica

Found naturally and in great quantities at the village of Kesset in Almachadta, irrica is a stone, appearing white from afar with an opalescent sheen, refracting many colors. Takes on patterns and colors of the corresponding gnosis used when gnosis-worked.

Pearl

Pearl in the sense of Samudran Pearl, which appear as normal pearls but are slightly larger and, even one alone, capable of some degree of locomotion.

Rakaznar

A metal appearing “black beyond black” initially, but containing shimmering veins of purple. It is light and thin in weight, “cold like black iron,” and seems to thrum like a living thing.

The substance formed by the radiant + tenebrous + liminal triad:

ꙮ The pillars themselves stretch from the floor to the ceiling of the cavern. Around ten Sword-Saints, standing on each others’ shoulders like they always do, tall, actually, when it comes down to it, and they’re every colour and none - a dim, but brightly shimmering grey, a grey with facets and bright faces and internal lustre, monochrome but no less lovely for it.

ꙮ Well, they shimmer with darkness, too. They couldn’t shimmer without having both, without the difference. They’d just glow. And that would be lovely, too, but these are shimmering, and they are cool and smooth to touch.

ꙮ It occurs to you, startlingly, that you have touched that of which they are made, once before.

Salme

closes her eyes and tries to recall when that might have been.

ꙮ It’s rather hard to forget. Although it was soft and textile, then, rather than cold and faceted; it was still the same stuff. You wove it yourself with great skill. Somewhere, beyond the strange paths, the Scorpion Queen is fondly regarding it at this very moment, even.

The “textile” version of this substance to which silmät refers:

ꙮ Five and one threads of gnosis twist through an unseen way, they chase each other through the air, briefly. Two helices, unmoored from and ungrasped by each other yet perfectly balanced around a center point, chasing each others tails in imagination and then, rather suddenly, literally. The artifact takes the form of two serpents, one thread-of-irrica and one chiaroscuro black-and-white, with little purple french-knot eyes, tangled hopelessly together, one’s tail in the other’s jaws– an act of play more than violence, or perhaps of steadfast determination, in principle, to not let go. ⁂
